“As schools prepare the next generation to engage in this maker economy, they’re creating a new kind of learning space where students can engage in a combination of hands-on processes and networking to bring their ideas to life.” This is a quote I found in a recent educational article and exactly what we are trying to do at Clear Sky Elementary!
Research tells us that thriving in a maker economy requires a capacity for lifelong learning characterized by curiosity, resiliency, problem solving, and self-direction. We also know there is a correlation between effective learning and the experience of constructing a meaningful product. (Exactly what we are doing with Project Based Learning!) Furthermore, it’s been shown that encounters with tools can promote self-discovery and new thinking, which support social and technological innovation.
The maker and coworking spaces that we have been learning about support these concepts in several important ways. First, they were created specifically for hands-on learning, with tools and supplies available within the space. Secondly, they provide opportunities for our students to build a community of learners. Finally, they create an environment where the teacher can become the learner and the learner can become the teacher. We are excited to create “Innovative Learning Spaces” at Clear Sky for our Innovative learners. Thank you so much for supporting our PTO and helping us fundraise to bring these ideas to life!
